About it all

Once upon a time...

...I was a little girl growing up on a farm in the Midwest (USA). I ran around outside, I played in the mud, I rode my bike, I climbed trees.

And I gardened, at first helping out on our large family garden for pretty much as long as I can remember.

me (middle, age 5) and my brother helping our dad plant our garden (I think potatoes here)
Eventually I was old enough to man a section of the garden on my own, in which I planted many-o-plants, mostly vegetables with a few flowers mixed in between. Later on I even took over a lot of the garden work and showed vegetables at our local county fair for the 4-H club I was in.

Needless to say, we enjoyed lots of nutritious, fresh vegetables every year. We tried so many different kinds of vegetables and had success with some more than others. We also had a melon patch in a different location which, unfortunately for us, often only amounted to a tasty late-night snack for the deer.

Life without

After years of living in rental apartments or houses in my days of studying for my degrees, I rarely had the time, money, or space for a garden of my own, and especially since I've lived in progressively larger cities (with barely any nature in sight and tasteless vegetables in the stores) over the past 10 years, I found myself really missing my roots - literally.

Today

A few years ago I realized that many vegetables can fit in window boxes, and I started to get excited - and creative - I could have a garden of my own in the city after all! Since then I've been trying out gardening (almost all edible) in window boxes, planters, and pots on the various balconies at the apartments I've lived at, experimenting to see what works best where, when, and how - and savoring the fruits of my labors. There's nothing like your own green plot of heaven in a big city to plant, care for, and enjoy.

About me

I'm a musician in her early 30, living in northern Germany, who also enjoys biking, reading, traveling, and good food.

I hope you enjoy my stories, share my ideas, and are inspired by my experiments to start your own garden!
